Ethical Considerations of Technology and the Law

We live in a society that is advancing technologically by the day, and there are more and more avenues for attorneys to advertise on the internet, social media, mobile applications, television, etc. With all of these different avenues comes regulation of the avenues. I think a few public policy concerns are making sure that attorneys uphold their duty to be ethical. When attorneys advertise to prospective clients to potentially get her business, sometimes they will cross the line and make guarantees that are not necessarily truthful. From what I understand thus far, marketing your business is important. However, I believe that the product of your work and the way you treat your clients is much more important. Sometimes, I feel like attorneys will sacrifice the quality of their work for to get more clients meaning in turn allowing them to bill more. I am personally not an advocate of referral services because I feel like that gives the attorneys the opportunity to act shady.
Furthermore, I don't think requiring specialty education for legal technology is necessarily a bad thing. One concern for this may be that attorneys advertise themselves as legal technology certified or as a specialist when they may not be. Also, I wonder how much saying that you are certified in technology actually has an impact on clients choosing a certain attorney. At the end of the day, clients are hiring you because they have a problem that they cannot fix without your help and whether having specialty credits in technology helps is a decision for individual attorneys. I will keep an open mind as more technology that could increase the efficiency of my practice comes out. I don't think it is ever smart to make snap decisions especially about things that could help your clients and improve your skills as a practicing attorney. One thing I am a little worried about is having so many different programs to help with my practice that it actually is not efficient. I have noticed that a lot of attorneys have chosen to stick with whatever form of technology they became comfortable with when they first started practicing.
